Driftwood Sailboat

I have been in love with this driftwood sailboat from WhiteFlower Farmhouse ever since Layla showed us hers.

So after spending Easter weekend on the Chesapeake Bay, I decided I would take my recent driftwood find and make my own!  My piece of wood was much smaller than I had wanted but it was the most boat-like out of my options.  I drilled a large hole for my stick mast.

I simply crammed my stick into the hole and didn’t bother with wood glue.  It was a nice tight fit.
For my sails, I used material scraps from a stained pareo from a trip I took years ago to Bali.  I have used this thing for three projects so far!  I’ll be sad when it’s gone.  I simply eyeballed some sail sizes, cut my sails, trimmed them with twine, and glued them into place.

I needed to drill another small hole in the front of the wood and place a stick for my jib sail.  I used a BBQ skewer to stuff the ends of my twine into the main sail hole.  The sails are glued in place at top.

Isn’t it so cute?  Here it is sailing on my mantel through my most recent shell acquisitions.

The boys wanted to try it out in their room.  It looks great here, but they will destroy it.

I convinced my guys to let Mommy play with it for awhile.  Oh, I love it in here!

And it cost me $0.00 and an hour of my time.  Not bad, huh?

And I couldn’t end this post without celebrating the fact that I have reached 1000 followers!!!  Wahoo!!!  Thanks to everyone who has become a Google Reader Friend over the past year and half!  If you’re an avid reader of mine, I encourage you to become one too.  I request that all entrants for my giveaways are official followers, and I currently have a great giveaway going on.  If you haven’t entered to win a chance at a $30 certificate for free Green Cleaning products, click here.

I've been jonesing for one of these sailboats since I saw them too. They are the sweetest thing! I love how you made yours. We are home in PA right now and there is a beach near us – I may stop to scoop up some driftwood. Ahh…it reminds me of childhood. My friends dad actually called me driftwood once. That's not the part that reminds me of childhood though.

  43. I love your little sailboat. I'm going to the coast this summer, maybe I'll have to make myself one. Thanks for the idea.
