I have been in the market for a new lamp for our family room, but I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on it. I liked the shape of this thrift store lamp and the price tag wasn’t too shabby either. Granted the shade was a bit 70′s for my taste, but I decided to make it work.
I loved these script shades from Pottery Barn and happened to have some similar Michael Miller fabric on hand that I ordered ages ago for a chair redo (that still needs to be “redid”

Here is my version! I sprayed the lamp in Rustoleum Gloss White and covered the shade with my fabric using spray adhesive.
I wasn’t really thinking “blog post” when I was doing this project so my photos are lacking. However, here is a tip for you if you are trying to figure out which fabric to place on your shade. Use office clipy thingies to secure your fabric to the shade.
If you like the look, cut any excess fabric as you remove the clips. Your edge will be very clean when you turn on the light and you won’t have to use ribbon or trim to mask that “ugly edge” you often see with DIY lamp shade redo’s (present company included). Use spray adhesive and smooth as you go to adhere the fabric to the shade and then use hot glue to quickly adhere the edges of the fabric to the inside of the lamp and you’re done!
Here’s a close-up of my shade. If you look closely, you can see that the spray adhesive soaked through my fabric and discolored it slightly. From a distance, you can’t tell at all, but it’s something to be careful about when applying your adhesive. Don’t go all spray crazy like I apparently did!
I’m loving the way it looks and loving that it cost me a scrap of fabric and a $5 thrift lamp!
The fabric on the shade is Michael Miller’s Antiquity Old Script, the basket under the coffee table came from the Christmas Tree Shop, the keys are from Hob Lob, the hobnail milk glass basket was a free find, the spools are from yours truly, the rug is jute/wool from Pottery Barn, and the coffee table came from a used furniture store when I was first married.

Wow, this looks great and I LOVE the fabric. I did something similar with a lamp I have and covered the shade with burlap. It didn't go under the shade well so I cut it off and added grossgrain ribbon on the edge. Love it!
